Makeup for Mom

Hey guys,

Sorry for the lack of posts the last few weeks. I went home for Christmas break and wanted to spend as much time as possible with my friends and fam. I had an amazing trip, and I even got a new blogging camera for Christmas! While I was home, my mom and I ventured to Sephora and she picked up some new makeup and face products. She always has trouble finding a foundation that matches her skin tone, so she ended up trying on a million different brands including Clinique, Dr. Jart, and Laura Mercier. She has oily skin and rosacea and also wanted something that didn’t look cakey or gather in wrinkles. If you have any of these problems, give those three brands a try.

Laura Mercier Mineral Powder in Classic Beige – This was the last foundation my mom tried and it looked amazing! All of the others looked really cakey and we thought this would do the same especially because it’s a powder. It went on smooth and gave a natural finish and the color was really warm.

Sephora Pro Flawless Powder Brush #40 – As you all know from previous posts, I absolutely love the Sephora Pro brushes, so of course we picked out a powder brush from that collection. These brushes are so soft and always pick up just the right amount of product and last forever.

Laura Mercier Smooth Focus Pressed Setting Powder – I’ve heard great things about this powder and now my mom carries it everywhere with her and loves it. It’s prefect for controlling shine and oil, and it also helps correct redness.

Cover FX Anti-Aging Primer – I’m always on the prowl for new primers, so I was really excited my mom got a brand I had never tried before. I was impressed that it not only gives a good base for foundation but also doubles as an anti-aging serum. I wasn’t in love with the texture because it’s more greasy than I’m used to, but I can look past that because it does a good job otherwise.

Josie Maran Pure Argan Milk – This is the perfect product for winter skin or skin that is really dry in general like mine. I will be purchasing this on my next trip to Sephora, and I was sneakily using it the whole time I was home (sorry mom). This stuff is lightweight and absorbs quickly. Absolutely love it!

DERMAdoctor Calm Cool & Corrected – This product helps calm rosacea and is also anti-aging. This is the prefect product for my mom and it’s really helping with her redness. This was also a new brand for me, so I’m interested in checking out the rest of the line after seeing how well this product has worked already.

Initially the girl at Sephora was trying foundations on my mom that targeted all of my moms concerns at once. What she decided at the end was it was better to use prep products like the DERMAdoctor, Argan Milk, and the FX primer to target those specific things and then use a more basic foundation. If you guys are having similar problems or have a lot of skin concerns try this method!

Dragon Girl

Hey guys,

As you know if you read my last post, I was snooping around Sephora a few days ago. I picked up an Origins face masks but also checked out the red lipsticks. I thought about picking up another Nars Audacious (I had my eye on Rita), but I ended up getting the Nars Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl. I looked at red lipsticks the last time I was in, and one of the girls recommended Dragon GIrl because she said it looked good on everyone. I rarely believe people when they say that, but after trying it myself and seeing it on two other people in Sephora, I actually think this one does.

This is generally how my hand looks when I leave Sephora. Dragon Girl is the third in from the left.

Verdict: This is my new favorite lipstick. I actually find this stays on better than the audacious, but I still love that formula as well. I’m currently sitting in Panera, and I’ve been wearing this lipstick for 3.5 hours while eating/drinking. It’s worn off a little but still looks pretty darn good. I will say it turned my sandwich a little pink though. Because its a pencil, I find it’s easier to put on than your average lipstick bullet. The color is definitely more of a pinkish red, but there are so many more red Nars Lip Pencil options if you would rather have a darker color.

Origins Mask Review

Hey guys,

I just got my Sephora $25 off gift card in the mail, so of course I went there today to pick something out. I’ve been really loving masks lately, so after looking around forever I finally decided to go with the Origins Clear Improvements Mask. I was initially eyeing up the Glamglow Supermud Clearing Mask, but I just couldn’t justify spending that much, and the Origins mask had very similar ingredients for a heck of a lot cheaper. Both products have active charcoal in them to help clear up blackheads, and that’s exactly what I was looking for.

Screen Shot 2014-12-04 at 5.08.49 PM

I decided to just put the product on my T zone because thats where my blackheads are, and I was worried about the more sensitive parts of my face getting too dry.

Screen Shot 2014-12-04 at 5.08.58 PM

I followed the directions and used a hot washcloth on my face before I applied to open my pores. I then applied the product and let it dry for about 10 minutes. The mask gets super tight on your face, so if you’re claustrophobic or things like that weird you out, this product might not be for you. The directions said just to rinse when finished, but the lady at Sephora recommended I use a washcloth to rinse it off. I followed up with Ole Henriksen Truth Serum and Hemp Face Protector from The Body Shop because the product is pretty drying.

Results: I really loved this mask and noticed a huge difference after I washed it off. It cleared out a lot of the junk, and I even checked out my face after in my magnifying mirror and it looked sooo much better. I still have a few blackheads in the corners of my nose, but I think using this a few times will clear it all up. I probably won’t use this anywhere but my T zone, but that’s actually perfect because it will allow me to conserve a lot of the product.

November Favorites: Makeup & Beauty

Hey guys,

There were so many products that I loved this month, but I managed to narrow it down to by absolute favorites. Some of them you’ve seen before in my other posts, but thats because I love them and use them on the reg!

Nars Audacious Lipstick in Anita and Charlotte – I am absolutely in love with these two colors. I wear Anita almost every day. It’s a pinky nude color that gives you a lips but better look. I’ve worn Charlotte both day and night, and it’s oxblood burgundy. The best thing about the audacious lipsticks is that they stay on for at least 4 hours (much longer than anything else i’ve used) and they don’t feather at all. I’ll definitely be picking up more in the future.

Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black and White Rollerballs – I’m sure you’re all tired of seeing these in my posts, but they smell soo yummy. The white is floral and the black is spicy/sweet/vanilla-like. I usually combine the two, but i’ve worn them separately as well. This is my first time using rollerballs and I think i’m only gong to purchase them from now on. I tend to get bored with perfumes, so I never use a whole bottle and these are much more affordable and convenient for travel.

Ole Henriksen Truth Serum – Okay, so you might remember this from my empties post a while ago when I said I wasn’t going to repurchase it. At the time I wasn’t using it everyday, so I didn’t notice a big difference in my skin. After I ran out I noticed my face started looking really dull. I decided to try it again and now use it everyday under my moisturizer and love it. It actually gives a nice amount of moisture on its own, so my face isn’t peeling or dry like it usually is.

Screen Shot 2014-12-02 at 10.53.40 AM

Oscar Blandi Dry Heat Protect Spray – This is the first spray i’ve found that goes on dry. That might seem like a weird request, but I hate having to re-wet my hair with heat spray before I straighten or curl it.

Screen Shot 2014-12-02 at 10.53.47 AM

Formula X Nail Polish in Vroom and Ignite – Formula X is hands down the best. These were the colors I wore the most in November. Ignite is a perfect Fall burgundy/red and Vroom is a really festive metallic bronze. I will probably wear both through the winter as well. I do have to admit that Vroom doesn’t stay as well as some of the other colors, but its so pretty that I think it’s worth it.

Screen Shot 2014-12-02 at 10.53.57 AM

Blendercleanser Solid – I hate cleaning my makeup brushes but this stuff makes it a million times easier. It’s also perfect for travel.

Screen Shot 2014-12-02 at 10.54.05 AM

L’Oreal Ever Pure Shampoo and Conditioner – I talked about this stuff in my last post. It’s a great drugstore shampoo/conditioner, and it’s safe on color treated hair. The smell is also really fresh and lovely.

Stop the Splurge

Hey guys,

I took a bit of a blog break for the holiday,  but now I’m back in action. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about which products are actually worth splurging on, and I think there are often options at drugstores that can do the same job for a lot less. I am certainly guilty of buying a lot of high end makeup, and there are items that I think are worth the splurge, but I also have cheaper items that I really love.

Screen Shot 2014-11-30 at 4.58.19 PM

There are so many good drugstore lip products out there, and these are just three examples that I grabbed. The Revlon Colorburst Gloss in Peony is one of my go-to products. It’s not sticky at all and is a really pretty sheer light pink. The Maybelline Super Stay 24 Color (top) is a more recent purchase, and I want to get it in a few more colors. The staying power is unmatched by anything else i’ve tried. It actually dries on your lips all the way and then you use the gloss side. The Revlon Colorburst Lacquer Balm in Coquette goes on similar to the Nars Lip Pencils. I don’t love the color, but i’ve been able to use it with other lipsticks/glosses.

Drugstore lip products are always a good idea, but I would especially suggest them if you are new to lipstick and just want to see what looks good with your skin tone or if you want to try something bold.

Makeup Remover

Screen Shot 2014-11-30 at 4.58.26 PM

I’ve seen a lot of blogs talking about how good the Clarins makeup remover ($28) is and other really expensive brands. Makeup remover is just one of those things that I don’t think I’ll ever splurge on. I’ve had good luck with store brand removers, and for really tough makeup I use the Body Shop Camomile Cleansing Butter ($16). It’s an oily consistency, so it takes off everything. Obviously $16 is still crazy for makeup remover, so I only get it when the Body Shop is having a sale (which they always are) and generally just use it for nights I go out and have a lot of makeup on.

I must admit i’m always super tempted to buy the fancy lotions and oils at Sephora. The L’Occitane Almond Oil looks amazing, but it’s $25 which is just insane! To make up for not getting that, I picked up this Vaseline Cocoa Radiant Body Gel Oil. It takes a a little bit of time to soak in, but once it does it’s non greasy and does a great job moisturizing. The Jergens Ultra Healing has been by go-to forever. Both my mom and my grandmother have always used it too.

Shampoo/Conditioners/Deep Conditioners

Screen Shot 2014-11-13 at 4.29.00 PM

OK, so right now the Living Proof set I have is pretty pricey. I do really love it, but i’ve decided to use a new method for my hair. My fancy shampoo is now only used on special occasions, so generally on weekends when I go out. I now use a cheaper but amazing option – Loreal Ever Pure Sulfate-Free Shampoo and Conditioner. It’s prefect for color treated hair and smells like rosemary/juniper. I also still use Head and Shoulders on Sunday…okay so maybe i’m a shampoo hoarder.

Deep Conditioners – I’ve never found a deep conditioner or mask that i’ve really loved. I think going homemade is the best way to do it. I’ve tried a lot of different homemade hair masks from Pinterest which mainly involve ingredients that you already have in your house such as eggs, avocados, coconut oil, or yogurt.

Lip Exfoliater/ Polish

There are so many different options for this at Sephora, and in my opinion they are all a waste of money. Coconut Oil + Sugar + rub on your lips = a happy mouth!

Makeup Storage

Hey guys,

So lately I’ve seen a lot of bloggers talking about their makeup storage, and it usually involves Muji drawers or other storage pieces that are somewhat pricey. While I would love to have Muji storage galore, I think there are other options that are more personalized and much cheaper.

Screen Shot 2014-11-24 at 9.29.42 AM

Here is my pink desk where I do my makeup everyday. You don’t necessarily have to have a desk or vanity just for makeup products. I actually use this desk to do my schoolwork and also for crafting. It was actually an old card table I found in my parents garage and painted pink. You can find a lot of good options at thrift stores and also Ikea if you want something new.

Screen Shot 2014-11-24 at 9.29.49 AM Screen Shot 2014-11-24 at 9.29.56 AM

I’ve had this little drawer set since my freshman year of undergrad. It was originally just for desk supplies, but now I use the top two drawers for makeup and the bottom for my supplies. I would eventually like to find some kind of storage for my nail polish, maybe an old type drawer from a thrift shop, but for now I just have it displayed on top.

A lot of the tea I drink comes in little tins, and they are perfect for storing products and brushes. You can also use the bottoms of tupperware and old candle containers (like the one pictured on the right) once you clean them out.

Screen Shot 2014-11-24 at 9.29.28 AM Screen Shot 2014-11-24 at 9.29.35 AM

The top container is from Target, and it’s one of my favorite things. I bought it for my apartment in undergrad and still have it because it’s prefect to separate cotton pads, q-tips, flossers, etc. The bottom container is actually a Truvia container that I cleaned out so I could store my cotton balls. I love finding new ways to repurpose things.

Screen Shot 2014-11-24 at 9.30.16 AM

This container was actually an old shower shelf that doesn’t fit in my current shower. I took off the suction cups in the back, and now I use it to store all of my hair products. It’s actually quite perfect for it.

Screen Shot 2014-11-24 at 9.30.10 AM Screen Shot 2014-11-24 at 9.30.04 AM

As I said, I also use this desk for studying and art projects. While most of those materials are kept in a storage cabinet next to my desk, I do keep my main supplies out for easy use.

I hope this helped you guys come up with ideas for alternative makeup storage. I would love to hear any crafty things you’ve come up with!

Night Out

Hey guys,

Tonight i’m heading to Terry’s brother’s house for Friendsgiving, a pre-Thanksgiving din din with a bunch of friends. I don’t get to be fancy that often, so I decided I would post what I decided to wear and what makeup I chose.

Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 3.43.22 PM

Express Pocket and Zip Crepe Front Tank in Black -I’ve come to the realization that almost all of my tops are black, but honestly I think black clothes make the most sense because they are slimming and go with everything. This tank is perfect year round, and I love that it has the gold zipper and pocket details.

Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 4.27.30 PM

I’ll be paring the top with my Loft Smokey Black Leggings. They are ridiculously comfy!

Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 3.43.42 PM

I’m not sure the exact name of these heels, but they are from DSW and should still be available there. I love the lace detailing, and they are so easy to walk in because they come up to the ankle.

Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 4.25.52 PM

I’m keeping the jewels on the minimum. The bracelet is from Forever 21 and the ring is from Old Navy.

Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 4.25.45 PM

I’m still rocking this off-white Aldo bag that I talked about in one of my recent posts. I’m throwing in my Bite lipstick, Nars Concealer in Vanilla, Nars Lipgloss in Penny Arcade in case I get bored with reapplying lipstick, a Bare Minerals Concealer Brush, and a clip in case my hair is annoying.

Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 3.43.33 PM

I’m sure you’ve seen most of these items at some point on my blog, so I won’t ramble on about them. I did a smokey eye tonight with a red lip. I decided to use the Givenchy Mascara because even though it’a hard to get off at night, it does give you amazing lashes. I also decided to use my Nars Black Eyeliner sample for my waterline, and I used the Bite VIB Bright Red lipstick.

Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 4.05.10 PM

I chose Half Baked, Smog, and Creep from the Naked Palette.

Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 3.43.03 PM

Here is the finished makeup look. The picture quality isn’t great, but hopefully this gives you an idea.

Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 4.25.28 PM

This is me trying to get my volume/shine on. Also, if you don’t have the BB Hairdresser’s Oil you should really get it.

Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 4.25.37 PM

Gotta have smell goods…pairing the Nirvana perfumes together makes me one happy clam. For my nails, I just decided to touch up the A+ Formula X polish I already had on.

Sorry to deny you guys a finished product picture, but taking a full length picture by yourself is tricky business. I’ll post some party pics later though!
