Stop the Splurge

Hey guys,

I took a bit of a blog break for the holiday,  but now I’m back in action. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about which products are actually worth splurging on, and I think there are often options at drugstores that can do the same job for a lot less. I am certainly guilty of buying a lot of high end makeup, and there are items that I think are worth the splurge, but I also have cheaper items that I really love.

Lipgloss/Lipstick

Screen Shot 2014-11-30 at 4.58.19 PM

There are so many good drugstore lip products out there, and these are just three examples that I grabbed. The Revlon Colorburst Gloss in Peony is one of my go-to products. It’s not sticky at all and is a really pretty sheer light pink. The Maybelline Super Stay 24 Color (top) is a more recent purchase, and I want to get it in a few more colors. The staying power is unmatched by anything else i’ve tried. It actually dries on your lips all the way and then you use the gloss side. The Revlon Colorburst Lacquer Balm in Coquette goes on similar to the Nars Lip Pencils. I don’t love the color, but i’ve been able to use it with other lipsticks/glosses.

Drugstore lip products are always a good idea, but I would especially suggest them if you are new to lipstick and just want to see what looks good with your skin tone or if you want to try something bold.

Makeup Remover

Screen Shot 2014-11-30 at 4.58.26 PM

I’ve seen a lot of blogs talking about how good the Clarins makeup remover ($28) is and other really expensive brands. Makeup remover is just one of those things that I don’t think I’ll ever splurge on. I’ve had good luck with store brand removers, and for really tough makeup I use the Body Shop Camomile Cleansing Butter ($16). It’s an oily consistency, so it takes off everything. Obviously $16 is still crazy for makeup remover, so I only get it when the Body Shop is having a sale (which they always are) and generally just use it for nights I go out and have a lot of makeup on.

Lotions/Oils

Screen Shot 2014-11-30 at 4.58.11 PM

I must admit i’m always super tempted to buy the fancy lotions and oils at Sephora. The L’Occitane Almond Oil looks amazing, but it’s $25 which is just insane! To make up for not getting that, I picked up this Vaseline Cocoa Radiant Body Gel Oil. It takes a a little bit of time to soak in, but once it does it’s non greasy and does a great job moisturizing. The Jergens Ultra Healing has been by go-to forever. Both my mom and my grandmother have always used it too.

Shampoo/Conditioners/Deep Conditioners

Screen Shot 2014-11-13 at 4.29.00 PM

OK, so right now the Living Proof set I have is pretty pricey. I do really love it, but i’ve decided to use a new method for my hair. My fancy shampoo is now only used on special occasions, so generally on weekends when I go out. I now use a cheaper but amazing option – Loreal Ever Pure Sulfate-Free Shampoo and Conditioner. It’s prefect for color treated hair and smells like rosemary/juniper. I also still use Head and Shoulders on Sunday…okay so maybe i’m a shampoo hoarder.

Deep Conditioners – I’ve never found a deep conditioner or mask that i’ve really loved. I think going homemade is the best way to do it. I’ve tried a lot of different homemade hair masks from Pinterest which mainly involve ingredients that you already have in your house such as eggs, avocados, coconut oil, or yogurt.

Lip Exfoliater/ Polish

There are so many different options for this at Sephora, and in my opinion they are all a waste of money. Coconut Oil + Sugar + rub on your lips = a happy mouth!

Makeup Storage

Hey guys,

So lately I’ve seen a lot of bloggers talking about their makeup storage, and it usually involves Muji drawers or other storage pieces that are somewhat pricey. While I would love to have Muji storage galore, I think there are other options that are more personalized and much cheaper.

Screen Shot 2014-11-24 at 9.29.42 AM

Here is my pink desk where I do my makeup everyday. You don’t necessarily have to have a desk or vanity just for makeup products. I actually use this desk to do my schoolwork and also for crafting. It was actually an old card table I found in my parents garage and painted pink. You can find a lot of good options at thrift stores and also Ikea if you want something new.

I’ve had this little drawer set since my freshman year of undergrad. It was originally just for desk supplies, but now I use the top two drawers for makeup and the bottom for my supplies. I would eventually like to find some kind of storage for my nail polish, maybe an old type drawer from a thrift shop, but for now I just have it displayed on top.

A lot of the tea I drink comes in little tins, and they are perfect for storing products and brushes. You can also use the bottoms of tupperware and old candle containers (like the one pictured on the right) once you clean them out.

Screen Shot 2014-11-24 at 9.29.28 AM Screen Shot 2014-11-24 at 9.29.35 AM

The top container is from Target, and it’s one of my favorite things. I bought it for my apartment in undergrad and still have it because it’s prefect to separate cotton pads, q-tips, flossers, etc. The bottom container is actually a Truvia container that I cleaned out so I could store my cotton balls. I love finding new ways to repurpose things.

Screen Shot 2014-11-24 at 9.30.16 AM

This container was actually an old shower shelf that doesn’t fit in my current shower. I took off the suction cups in the back, and now I use it to store all of my hair products. It’s actually quite perfect for it.

Screen Shot 2014-11-24 at 9.30.10 AM Screen Shot 2014-11-24 at 9.30.04 AM

As I said, I also use this desk for studying and art projects. While most of those materials are kept in a storage cabinet next to my desk, I do keep my main supplies out for easy use.

I hope this helped you guys come up with ideas for alternative makeup storage. I would love to hear any crafty things you’ve come up with!

Night Out

Hey guys,

Tonight i’m heading to Terry’s brother’s house for Friendsgiving, a pre-Thanksgiving din din with a bunch of friends. I don’t get to be fancy that often, so I decided I would post what I decided to wear and what makeup I chose.

Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 3.43.22 PM

Express Pocket and Zip Crepe Front Tank in Black -I’ve come to the realization that almost all of my tops are black, but honestly I think black clothes make the most sense because they are slimming and go with everything. This tank is perfect year round, and I love that it has the gold zipper and pocket details.

Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 4.27.30 PM

I’ll be paring the top with my Loft Smokey Black Leggings. They are ridiculously comfy!

Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 3.43.42 PM

I’m not sure the exact name of these heels, but they are from DSW and should still be available there. I love the lace detailing, and they are so easy to walk in because they come up to the ankle.

Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 4.25.52 PM

I’m keeping the jewels on the minimum. The bracelet is from Forever 21 and the ring is from Old Navy.

Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 4.25.45 PM

I’m still rocking this off-white Aldo bag that I talked about in one of my recent posts. I’m throwing in my Bite lipstick, Nars Concealer in Vanilla, Nars Lipgloss in Penny Arcade in case I get bored with reapplying lipstick, a Bare Minerals Concealer Brush, and a clip in case my hair is annoying.

Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 3.43.33 PM

I’m sure you’ve seen most of these items at some point on my blog, so I won’t ramble on about them. I did a smokey eye tonight with a red lip. I decided to use the Givenchy Mascara because even though it’a hard to get off at night, it does give you amazing lashes. I also decided to use my Nars Black Eyeliner sample for my waterline, and I used the Bite VIB Bright Red lipstick.

Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 4.05.10 PM

I chose Half Baked, Smog, and Creep from the Naked Palette.

Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 3.43.03 PM

Here is the finished makeup look. The picture quality isn’t great, but hopefully this gives you an idea.

Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 4.25.28 PM

This is me trying to get my volume/shine on. Also, if you don’t have the BB Hairdresser’s Oil you should really get it.

Screen Shot 2014-11-22 at 4.25.37 PM

Gotta have smell goods…pairing the Nirvana perfumes together makes me one happy clam. For my nails, I just decided to touch up the A+ Formula X polish I already had on.

Sorry to deny you guys a finished product picture, but taking a full length picture by yourself is tricky business. I’ll post some party pics later though!

Five Things

Hey guys,

This week there were a few things I found myself constantly reaching for. I’ll still do a post about November favorites later on, but here are the five products i’ve been loving this week.

Screen Shot 2014-11-20 at 5.29.52 PM

Ole Henriksen Cleansing Cloths – These wipes are perfect for taking off your makeup before working out and getting all the sweat and grime off after. I’ve been keeping them in my big bag for unexpected gym visits, and they smell really yummy like oranges.

Screen Shot 2014-11-20 at 5.29.39 PM

Evolution Fresh Green Juice – Green juice is sooo yummy and good for you. I always pick up this brand or the Suja green juice when they’re on sale at Publix.

Screen Shot 2014-11-20 at 5.29.45 PM

Screen Shot 2014-11-20 at 5.29.32 PM

Formula x Nail Polish in A+ – I got this lil guy as a point perk, and both of these pictures don’t really do it justice. I really love hot pink nail polish, and this one is a mix between hot pink and cranberry. It sounds like a strange mix, but it’s the perfect fall color in my opinion.

Screen Shot 2014-11-20 at 5.29.58 PM

Black Motorcycle Boots – I’ve had these boots since undergrad, and I can’t for the life of me remember where I bought them. I want to say it was Macy’s though. Every year I bust them out at about this time, and they really go with everything and give your outfit a badass vibe. Lerve it.

Screen Shot 2014-11-20 at 5.30.05 PM

Aldo Marlengo Bag in Ice – I’ve been wearing a lot of black lately, so I love having an off-white bag that stands out against my outfits. It also perfectly fits my iPad mini and has really cute details.

Brush Talk

Hey guys,

I’ve been using Bare Mineral Brushes for a really long time. They came with a Bare Mineral set that I bought about 4 or 5 years ago, and for the most part they worked well. They’ve started to become a bit worn though, and I’ve read a lot of blog posts about how using good brushes can really change your makeup. I started by picking up the Sephora Pro Flawless Airbrush when I bought my foundation, and i’ve slowly collected more since then. I also still use a few brushes that aren’t Sephora Pros, so i’ll talk about them as well.

Screen Shot 2014-11-19 at 12.06.25 PM

Screen Shot 2014-11-19 at 12.06.37 PM

Sephora Pro Flawless Airbrush #56 – This does an amazing job with foundation and blends concealer in nicely. It also doesn’t suck up a lot of product, so I only need one pump of foundation and don’t have to waste it.

Sephora Pro Angled Blush Brush #49 – I noticed a big difference between this blush brush and the bare minerals one I was using. This one isn’t scratchy at all, and it’s smaller so you can put your blush in exactly the right place.

Sephora Pro Angled Contour Brush #75 – I absolutely love this! I use it for my bronzer, and it really takes a lot of the mystery out of contouring. Like the blush brush, it also has a smaller head so placement is easy.

Screen Shot 2014-11-19 at 12.06.46 PM

Sephora Pro Blending Brush # 27 – These guys are the gems of my brush collection. I actually have three of them which might seem excessive, but I like to have at least one clean one for blending out my eyeshadow at the end. If you don’t have a blending brush, and you like a smokey eye, you should probably pick one up right meow.

Screen Shot 2014-11-19 at 12.06.53 PM

Paint Brush – Ok, i know this is weird. I’ve had this in my collection forever, but it really comes in handy. I think using a paint brush for certain things is amazing option because they are always really soft but super cheap. I usually use it as a lip brush if I’m putting on a dark color, and also for liquid eyeliner and covering blemishes with concealer.

Essence of Beauty Crease Brush – I just had to look this up because its been in my makeup collection forever, and I’m pretty sure I stole it from my sister. You can apparently get this brand from ultra and CVS, and I have to say it’s really soft and I love it. This is the only one i’ve had form this brand, but I would definitely consider trying some others from this brand.

Bare Essentials Max Coverage Concealer Brush – This is the only Bare Minerals Brush I’m still using on the reg. It has held up a lot better than the other brushes, and it does such a nice job at blending concealer under the eyes and on blemishes. This is the brush that I usually bring with me on a night out because it’s small and fits nicely in a clutch, but I also find that it’s just as easy to use your foundation blush for to blend concealer.

Screen Shot 2014-11-19 at 12.07.01 PM

Blendercleanser Solid – I don’t have a lot of experience with brush cleansers, but i’ve really enjoyed this one so far. It’s a little bar of soap and you wet your brush and rub it across the surface to clean it. I believe this is actually the travel one, and the regular one is a liquid soap. I picked this up instead of the liquid because it received better reviews.

Sunday Pamper: Food Edition

Hey guys,

So I woke up today with a hangover, and I didn’t even drink last night. I don’t know if this happens to other people, but every once in a while i’ll feel really crappy due to poor eating habits. I have a serious sweet tooth, and I also hate cooking. If I don’t go to Terry’s for dinner I usually end up eating out or eating something bad.

After sleeping most of the morning, I decided I should go to the grocery store and stock up on some healthier options. I also decided to set some goals: cut down on products with added sugar, eat more veggies, drink more water. I went to Fresh Market and Publix, and this is what i picked up:

Kefir is really yummy and tastes very similar to yogurt. It contains probiotics which are good for digestive health. It does have more added sugar than I wanted, but I haven’t been able to find a plain one. This one is a smoothie consistency, so you can mix it with berries or put it over cereal/granola.

Screen Shot 2014-11-16 at 7.08.34 PM

Suzie’s Think Healthy Thin Cakes – These are really yummy with almond butter on them. They have a good crunch and 2 or 3 are the perfect snack size.

I’ve always been scared of quinoa because it seemed really difficult to make. This was my first time making it, and it ended up being soooo easy. Overall it’s a lot like rice in taste and consistency. I added yellow squash, edamame, and onions.

Screen Shot 2014-11-16 at 7.07.58 PM

I probably drink way too much tea, but I just can’t stop. This one is great for nighttime because it’s caffeine free, and it has a really fresh/soothing flavor.  I find that tea is a good replacement for dessert or a late night snack. It’s sweet even without adding sugar.

Big Hair Don’t Care

Hey guys,

As i’ve mentioned before, my hair is quite limp and lifeless. I’m always on the search for products that make it voluminous, and I’m a big fan of Bumble and Bumble and a few others for doing just that. If i had to recommend just one product it would be the Bumble and Bumble Thickening Dryspun Finish, but i also have some other product loves that I use as well.

Screen Shot 2014-11-13 at 4.28.49 PM

Screen Shot 2014-11-13 at 4.28.16 PM

Bumble and Bumble Thickening Dryspun Finish – This stuff is amazing. You spray it in your roots when your hair is dry, and it gives you an instant lift. It’s also great if your hair is really slippery and you want to put it up or style it in a certain way. It gives a little bit of grip and texture, which is something that I really like, but I know some people are not fond of that part.

Screen Shot 2014-11-13 at 4.28.27 PM

Bumble and Bumble Thickening Full Form Mousse – Before i discovered the Dryspun Spray, I would use this mousse almost every day, and I still choose to use it sometimes instead. These two are fairly different because the mousse makes your hair a little more stiff than the spray, and it’s not really the same texturized/sticky feeling. You also add this to your roots when your hair is wet, instead of when it’s dry.

Screen Shot 2014-11-13 at 4.28.38 PM

Bumble and Bumble Pret-a-Powder – When I first bought this, I didn’t realize it would also be a volumizer. This product really does it all. It soaks up any oil in your roots, give great volume, and helps add grip to your hair so you can style it. It’s kind of a pain because it’s a powder, but you definitely get used to it.

Screen Shot 2014-11-13 at 4.29.00 PM

Living Proof Full Shampoo and Conditioner –  This is one my first Living Proof products, and I have to say i’m pretty happy with it. I’ve tried a lot of volume shampoos/conditioners, but this is one that actually does the job. It’s also sulfate free, which means its safe on color-treated hair.

Let me know if you guys know any other really good products for volume!
